Minister Laments Deplorable Conditions at Ikoyi Correctional Centre

Hon Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, on Monday bemoaned the dilapidated state of structures at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, saying that government would reform and redevelop what was on ground.

Tunji-Ojo made this promise while addressing newsmen after inspecting various agencies and parastatals under the Ministry of Interior in Lagos.

The minister promised to develop the structures and facilities in the Ikoyi correctional centre, adding that it would also explore interagency collaboration.

“So we are very sure in due course Nigerians will see what we will do. It won’t be business as usual.

“It is going to be an enhancement of efficiency and management of government’s structural resources in such a way that Nigeria will be a safer place.

“People will be happy to come to the correctional centre. Urbanisation is real and has come down on this facility.

“I see no reason why this facility should be here. The government will look into this to see how we can perhaps relocate some of this correctional centres,” the minister said.

He noted that the law specified a buffer zone of 100 meters for correctional centres and adjoining lands, but added that for the Ikoyi Correctional Centre that stipulation had been violated.

Tunji-Ojo stressed that the present administration was a law-abiding government and would explore all opportunities and avenues to make right what may be wrong with the centre.

He said that the goal of government was to have custodial centres that would be good correctional centres indeed, and not a place that would be psychologically damaging.

“So, we want the inmates in the correctional centres to be reformed, transformed and corrected.

“And we think that the change of name from prison, which is a place of incarceration, to correction which is a place of transformation should take effect indeed.

“We don’t want to pay lip service to the change of name, we want a change of ideology, orientation and a change in terms of our approach of reformation so that people will leave here and see this place as a place of hope.

”We want this place to be a place of education and transformation, and we believe that in this environment it is difficult to achieve that. This place is more like a security threat with due respect,” he said.

EdoDecides2024: Why I visited INEC collation centre at 2am, Obaseki explains

Godwin Obaseki,

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has clarified his visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation centre in Benin City early Sunday morning.

He arrived around 2 a.m. and remained on-site until police, led by Deputy Inspector General Frank Mba, escorted him out.

The visit came amid protests from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including Dennis Idahosa, the running mate of Monday Okpebholo, who demanded Obaseki’s departure from the INEC premises at approximately 3:30 a.m.

In a press briefing at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Situation Room, Obaseki explained that he sought clarification from the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) after receiving reports that the collation process had stalled and that PDP agents were being denied entry.

He said, “At about 1 am, I got a report that collation was supposed to have been moved to the INEC head office. I also got reports from our agents that PDP agents were not allowed into the collation centre. At that point in time, I called the REC to find an explanation of what was going on. There was no response.

“Then I went to the INEC office to meet with the REC and to understand what steps INEC was taking to continue the process of collation. When I got in there at about 2:00 am, I did not see any coalition taking place and the REC refused to come out to explain what the situation was.

“Subsequently, the DIG Police Frank Mba came in and had a meeting with me where I explained that if INEC was postponing or stopping the collation process, then as part of their rules, they should inform the public as to what next.

“As of 3:00 a.m., there was no information from INEC as to what was going to what was going on or what was going to happen next. It was subsequently after my insistence and meeting with Mr Frank Mba that INEC now released a statement at about 5:00a.m this morning informing the public that the collation process would start at 10 a.m. this morning.

“So, my go in there was essentially to obtain information from INEC because they had refused to put any information in the public domain as to what was going to happen with the collation process.”

INEC Speaks On Announcement Of Edo Election Results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has not received governorship election results from any of the 18 local government areas (LGAs) in Edo State.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo State, Anugbum Onuoha, in an interview on Saturday, explained that the results of the election are still at the ward level and would travel to the local government level before being sent to the state collation centre.

“I cannot categorically tell you when we will announce the results in the state. As they come, we will announce,” Onuoha stated.

“For now, no results yet” from any of the local government, he said.

The REC warned social media users announcing the “results” of the poll, saying that is the position of the commission.

“I want to correct one thing: those who are publishing results, it is not their duty to announce results.

“INEC has not announced results. I am not even the returning officer for the state. The returning officer will announce the results. But I am surprised with what I see on social media. That is not the correct position of the commission.

“Nobody has the capacity to do that. The law is clear on who can announce the results. So, they should desist,” he said.

Meanwhile, the electoral umpire has uploaded over 90% of polling unit result sheets of Saturday’s governorship election on the commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

Out of the 4519 polling units, the electoral umpire has uploaded the result sheets of 3995 polling units on the portal as of 07:40 pm on Saturday.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, the people of Edo State in South-South Nigeria voted to elect a new governor to succeed the incumbent, Godwin Obaseki, whose constitutional eight-year double terms will end on November 12, 2024.

Edo is one of the eight states where governorship elections are held off-season due to litigations and court judgements. Others are Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun and Ondo.

According to INEC, there are 2,629,025 total number of registered voters and 4,519 polling units in Edo State. Out of this figure, 2,249,780 (85.57%) have Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and will decide Obaseki’s successor.

Though 17 candidates are jostling for the office, analysts have described the forthcoming poll as a three-horse race involving Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).

In terms of party strongholds, the APC has current senators in Edo North (Adams Oshiomhole) and Edo Central (Okpebholo) while the Labour Party’s senator Neda Imasuen is from Edo South where Akpata hails from.
