Nigerian athlete Favour Ofili secured a spot in the women’s 200 meters final at the Olympic Games held at the Stade de France in Paris on Monday night.
Ofili achieved a season-best time of 22.05 seconds, finishing just behind the new women’s 100m champion, Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, in the first semi-final heat.
She will compete alongside seven other finalists in Tuesday evening’s event, ranking third overall.
Ofili ranks lowest at 31st in the world and has a personal best time of 21.96.
In the semi-finals, Alfred recorded a time of 21.98, while Gabrielle Thomas of the U.S. clocked 21.86 to win the second heat of the semi-finals.
Ofili is the first Nigerian woman to qualify for the 200m final at the Olympics in 28 years. The last Nigerian to do so was Mary Onyali, who reached the final and won a bronze medal in the event at the Atlanta 1996 Games.
