Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has reacted to his nomination for the 2024 CAF Men’s Player Of The Year Award by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF on Thursday nominated Troost-Ekong alongside his fellow Nigerian compatriot, Ademola Lookman for the prestigious individual award.

The duo are among the 10 players shortlisted for the award by CAF in the list released on its official X handle as well as website on Thursday.

Troost-Ekong’s nomination came on the back of being named in CAF’s Best XI of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast following his impressive performances in the competition.

He played an important role in Nigeria reaching the final which the three-time African champions lost 2-1 to the host nation.

The 31-year-old shared the list on his official Facebook page on Friday afternoon and wrote: “Honoured.”

Troost-Ekong scored three goals as a defender and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. He also became the highest scoring defender in the history of the competition with five goals.

He scored the penalty that earned Nigeria all the three points in the group phase against hosts Ivory Coast.

Troost-Ekong also scored a spot-kick in the semi-final against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa and his header had put Nigeria ahead in the final.

However, the three-time champions capitulated in the later stages of the game as goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller won it for the Ivorians.
