Mason Greenwood made a stunning debut for Marseille on Saturday, scoring twice as Roberto De Zerbi’s revamped team triumphed 5-1 over Brest in their Ligue 1 opener.
The former Manchester United striker found the net within three minutes and added another goal from a penalty just before the half-hour mark, following Luis Henrique’s goal that had already given Marseille a two-goal advantage.
Henrique scored again after Mahdi Camara’s forceful attempt had reduced the deficit to 3-1 before halftime, with Greenwood playing a role in both of Henrique’s goals.
Greenwood earned a second penalty after being fouled by Jordan Amavi, though it was another new Marseille recruit, Elye Wahi, who converted it.
The 22-year-old Greenwood joined the team last month from Old Trafford, where he initially showed great promise before being suspended in January 2022 due to allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault.

Charges against him were dropped in February 2023, and he spent the previous season playing in Spain with Getafe. However, the signing of Greenwood has faced criticism from Marseille fans, including the city’s left-wing mayor, Benoit Payan.
Greenwood was among five new additions to the Marseille squad, alongside Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, Canadian defender Derek Cornelius, Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Wahi, who was acquired from Lens on Tuesday.
