Ademola Lookman has equalled Duván Zapata's UEFA Champions League record

Ademola Lookman has equalled the UEFA Champions League record of Duván Zapata as the second player in the history of Atalanta to score and assist in a UEFA Champions League match.

Lookman achieved this feat on Wednesday evening when he struck the back of the net and also made an assist to help Atalanta beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 away at the Arena AufSchalke.

The Super Eagles attacking sensation got the assist for the first goal, playing a pass into the penalty area which Berat Djimsiti sent into the back of the net in the 21st minute.

In the 36th minute, the 26-year-old had a wonderful chance to double the away side’s lead and get his name on the scoresheet when he struck a first-time shot against the woodwork.

A minute before the end of the first half, he was set up by a pass from Sead Kolašinac and he made no mistake this time around to score his first ever goal in the Champions League.

Lookman was also named Player of the Match with UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel saying: “He showed great skill and was outstanding with the ball, providing a goal, assist,” it said.

“The Nigerian international forward also had two chances and he hit the crossbar. Always available to his team-mates, he displayed tactical clever movement and good defensive work.”

Lookman did not finish the game, though as Mateo Retegui replaced him in the 60th minute.

His goal against Shakhtar was his third so far in six appearances in all competitions for Atalanta during the 2024/25 season.
