Victor Boniface missed the chance to reach perfection in the German Bundesliga after missing a penalty against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Bay Arena on Saturday.
Boniface, however, redeemed himself by scoring the goal which helped Leverkusen to defeat Frankfurt 2-1 in a keenly contested Bundesliga match.
The Super Eagles attacker went from being a villain to becoming a hero by scoring the decisive goal despite his ordeal with the national team in Libya earlier in the week.
Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso felt the forward was fit enough to start the game and Boniface had a chance to open the scoring in the ninth minute after Frankfurt’s Eric Ebimbe gave away a penalty for fouling Amine Adli.
However, his spot-kick was saved by German goalkeeper, Kevin Trapp but Leverkusen quickly responded, with Robert Andrich leveling the score in the 25th minute after the visitors had taken the lead.
The match remained tight until Boniface redeemed himself, heading in the winning goal from close range to secure all three points for his team.
This marked Boniface’s fifth league goal of the season and his second in consecutive games. He was substituted in the 80th minute for Patrik Schick, while fellow Nigerian, Nathan Tella replaced Jeremie Frimpong in the final 10 minutes.
Had Boniface converted the penalty against Eintracht Frankfurt, he would have increased his goal contribution tally in the Bundesliga to 20 goals and 10 assists in 30 appearances which could have meant perfection.
