Alex Iwobi has rued Fulham’s draw with Everton in a Premier League game on Saturday, calling it a bittersweet moment despite scoring.
Iwobi scored his second Premier League goal in seven games against his former side when he visited Goodison Park to face Everton with the Cottagers.
It felt like Iwobi was going to haunt his old club after his 61st-minute strike courtesy of an assist from Emile Smith Rowe until substitute, Beto scored a late equaliser for Everton.
Smith Rowe picked the ball up in the Everton half, jinked and shimmied past three challenges and created a chance for team-mate, Iwobi who still a had lot of work to do to hit the net.
The Nigerian finished with aplomb after a well-hit drilled effort sailed past Jordan Pickford who was in goal for the Toffees, leaving the England goalkeeper with no chance to get down quickly enough.
A respectful celebration followed by former Evertonian, Iwobi, though those in the away end were in delirium. The Super Eagles midfielder was taken off for Jorge Cuenca in the 90th minute.
“It is always nice to get a goal but the main thing, whether I score or not is to get the three points,” Iwobi told the official website of Fulham after the game.
“It is a bit of a bittersweet moment but we have to learn from our mistakes. It happened before against West Ham. We’re kind of disappointed, but we’ll look at the positives to go into the Brentford game.”
As the team turns its sights to the upcoming Premier League game against Brentford, Iwobi emphasised the importance of learning from these setbacks.
“It is almost like a loss because everyone is not too happy but the manager says we should be proud of the performance and try not to stay down, so we will look at the positives and go again,” he concluded.
