Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso stated on Thursday that Bayern Munich remain the top contenders for the Bundesliga title this season, even though his team achieved an impressive league and cup double last year.
“For me, the favourites are Bayern, that’s clear,” Alonso said at a press conference ahead of Friday’s Bundesliga season opener away at Borussia Moenchengladbach.
“Our goal is to stay in the top four. That’s realistic — we have a good squad.”
Leverkusen claimed their inaugural Bundesliga title, bringing Bayern’s 11-year dominance in Germany to an end and leaving them without a trophy for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
