Aribo nets first Premier League goal in two-years

Joe Aribo scored his first Premier League goal for Southampton in two-years on Saturday but the Saints’ winless run continues as they suffered defeat despite going 2-0 ahead against Leicester City.

Before Saturday’s game at the Saint Mary’s Stadium, Aribo last found joy in the Premier League with a goal to his name in October 2022 when he netted the Saints’ only goal in a 2-1 home defeat to Everton.

Cameron Archer handed Southampton the lead in the eight minute of the encounter before Aribo struck the second for the hosts twenty minutes later.

Aribo side-footed home a clever Kyle Walker-Peters cut-back to double the Saints’ advantage against the wobbling Foxes.

Despite going 2-0 up, the Saints found a way to lose 3-2 against Leicester whose midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi was playing his 200th Premier League match from which he has seven goals and 13 assists.

Leicester scored three second-half goals to come from behind and stun 10-man Southampton, denying them a first Premier League win of the season.

The result means the Saints have set a club record for the longest winless run in their entire top-flight history, having failed to emerge victorious from any of their last 21 Premier League encounters.
