Finidi George, the former Nigerian international footballer, has stepped down as the head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, just one month after his appointment.
Finidi confirmed his resignation to PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday, following reports of his departure.
He responded “Yes” via SMS to an inquiry from PREMIUM TIMES.
His decision comes after a disappointing start to his tenure, with the team failing to win either of their World Cup qualifying matches under his leadership.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has already announced plans to appoint an expatriate technical adviser, which may have prompted Finidi’s resignation.
During his brief stint, the Super Eagles drew 1-1 with South Africa and lost 2-1 to Benin Republic in Abidjan.
Finidi, a member of Nigeria’s “Golden Generation,” had previously served as an assistant coach under José Santos Peseiro before taking the reins in April.
His resignation marks a swift end to his managerial career with the national team.
