Alphonso Davies, the 23-year-old Bayern Munich winger, will captain Canada in their Copa America opener against Argentina. Coach Jesse Marsch’s decision means Davies will face Lionel Messi during the coin toss on Thursday. Born to Liberian parents in a Ghanaian refugee camp, Davies moved to Canada at five and has since become the nation’s top football talent.
“We don’t expect him to get everything perfect right now and by the way captains don’t have to get everything perfect all the time anyway, but for sure I think that he will have a platform and the support and an opportunity to grow within the role and continue to become everything that we know that he will become,” he added.
Davies expressed immense pride in captaining Canada, thanking his coach and teammates for their trust. Marsch highlighted Davies’ leadership qualities and potential to guide the team, especially as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup. Despite rumors of a move to Real Madrid, Davies remains focused on Copa America.
