The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu has said that he hopes the outgoing Governor, Godwin Obaseki has learnt his lessons.
Shaibu who was impeached as the deputy governor of Edo after falling out with Obaseki before being reinstated said this during an interview on Arise Television on Monday morning.
He granted the interview after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the governorship election in Edo State.
Okpebholo was declared by INEC as the winner on Sunday following the collation of results of the governorship election that was held on Saturday.
“I feel vindicated because even the governor could not win his local government. I won my unit, ward and local government,” Shaibu told Arise TV.
“Where are the governor’s results? He has never won, we always assisted him. I hope that Obaseki has learnt his lessons.
“What is left now is for him to go back and start begging and apologizing to the people of Edo State.
Shaibu who defected to the APC from the PDP a few months ago had also taken to his official X account on Sunday to celebrate Okpebholo’s victory.
“Today, we celebrate the triumph of democracy in Nigeria, particularly in Edo State. I commend the resilient people of Edo for their patience and active participation in the elections,” he wrote.
“Your voices were heard through your votes for Senator Monday Okpebholo and Hon. Dennis Idahosa of the All Progressives Congress. I say a big congratulations to the newly elected governor, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
“This victory solidifies the power of the people, affirming the government of the people, by the people and for the people. Thank you, Edo State, and congratulations to the APC family.”
The APC and opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had maintained an early lead in strongholds following the collation of some results by INEC.
Okpebholo, however, emerged as the winner following the final collation of results and he is now set to succeed Obaseki as Edo State governor.
