FG and Obi Clash Over Controversial New Presidential Jet Purchase

Peter Obi vehemently condemned the purchase of a new Presidential Jet, calling it an intolerable display of disregard for the Nigerian people’s suffering.

Expressing his outrage on his X handle on Monday, the former Anambra governor lamented that as Nigeria grapples with an economic crisis marked by hyperinflation, a depreciating currency, and pervasive poverty, the Federal Government is considering acquiring new presidential jets.

He stated, “This decision epitomizes a profound insensitivity to the struggles of our citizens. Amid rising insecurity, widespread poverty, hunger, and homelessness, this move underscores the glaring disconnect between the government and the people. It is wholly unacceptable, especially now, when our nation demands a more compassionate and judicious use of resources, prioritizing the welfare of our citizens.”

“It is well-documented that our presidential jets average 12 years in age, purchased during a time when most Nigerians could afford basic necessities. Now, as we face monumental challenges and a crippling debt profile, our people are in dire need. Instead of indulging in luxuries, we should be devoted to alleviating their suffering and addressing their urgent needs.”

“While we previously spent $2 million refurbishing the old Vice President’s residence, the over 100-year-old US Vice President’s house has only undergone major renovations twice, funded by taxpayers’ money; in 1993 and 2021. Each new US Vice President can finance any minor refurbishments personally.”

Advice from Obi to FG

“It is high time we put an end to this impunity, insensitivity, and shamelessness. We must refocus on the needs of our people, prioritizing education, healthcare, and lifting our citizens out of poverty. Together, we can build a nation that genuinely serves its people, not just the interests of a privileged few.”
