We will appeal Bayelsa court judgment against Olukoyede – EFCC

The EFCC will appeal the judgment a Bayelsa court made against its chairman, Ola Olukoyede

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed its readiness to appeal the judgment a Bayelsa court made against its chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

The EFCC said this in a statement which signed by its spokesman, Dele Oyewale and posted on its X official account on Friday.

“The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been drawn to a trending report in the media that Ola Olukoyede, the Commission’s Executive Chairman risks committal to prison for alleged violation of the orders of Justice Isa H. A. Dashen of a Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State,” Oyewale said.

“The said order restrains the EFCC from seizing properties belonging to Bliss Multinational Perfections Limited and Bribena, which are alleged proceeds of investment fraud otherwise known as Ponzi scheme.

“It is important to point out that the September 4, 2024 judgment by Justice Dashen came to the Commission by surprise as the EFCC was not put on notice of the judgment date.

“Denying the EFCC hearing notice was tantamount to blind-siding the Commission, and by extension a denial of fair hearing in the instant case.

“The commission is therefore taking steps to appeal the judgment, which is still within the time allowed.”

Oyewale said an earlier decision by the court in a similar case involving the same defendants is currently on appeal at the appellate court in Port Harcourt.

The spokesman said the EFCC wishes to once again reaffirm its commitment to rule of law and will not wilfully violate any court order.

According to Oyewale, Bliss Multinational Perfection and Arch Oyinmiebi Bribena, the Chief Executive Officer of Baraza Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, were investigated and indicted for investment fraud in which 123 petitioners lost over N2billion to the suspects who promised them 25 percent return on investment but neither got the promised return nor recover the funds invested.

Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger to launch new biometric passport amid ECOWAS exit

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic will launch a new biometric passport amid their exit from ECOWAS

Three countries, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic have announced plans to launch a new biometric passport amid their exit from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The decision points towards the latest step in the growing alliance among the three West African nations who are currently being led by military juntas.

The military leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger seized power through a series of coups between 2020 and 2023 and in January 2024, they collectively announced their plan to withdraw from the ECOWAS.

The three West African nations have now decided to form the Alliance of Sahel States which is expected to take place “in the coming days.”

They decided to take this step following sanctions imposed by other West African countries in an attempt to pressure the juntas into restoring democracy in the three nations.

However, the Alliance of Sahel States has stood their ground in resisting these calls, instead deciding to fortify the partnership among themselves.

“In the coming days, a new biometric passport of the alliance will be put into circulation with the aim of harmonising travel documents in our common area,” said Col Assimi Goïta, the leader of Mali’s junta and acting president of the Sahel alliance in a televised speech on Sunday evening.
