UNICEF Global Champions Alarmed by Surging Malnutrition Rates in Katsina

Ali Nuhu and Sadau Ramah, who are Global Champions for UNICEF, have expressed concern over the high number of children suffering from malnutrition in Katsina State.

At a press conference held on Thursday in Katsina, the UNICEF Global Champions urged stakeholders to strengthen their efforts to combat malnutrition and lower the child mortality rate.

The Champions for Children are a distinctive group of UNICEF supporters who play a crucial role in enhancing health, nutrition, and educational services for children worldwide, as stated by the UN.

According to PUNCH, the state government and UNICEF took action on Wednesday by purchasing N400 million worth of nutritional supplements to be distributed to 8,000 malnourished children across all 34 local government areas of the state.

During an immediate evaluation of various local government areas in the state, Nuhu remarked that the situation he observed regarding the number of malnourished children was distressing.

“What we saw was pathetic. We even noticed a rise in the number of children being brought to health centres because they were malnourished.

“There is a need for stakeholders, including the state government, to urgently intensify efforts to address the situation,” Nuhu said.

He also mentioned that the large figure might be related to the economic struggles that many families in the state and across the nation are experiencing.

Ramah also urged stakeholders to remain vigilant and persistent in addressing malnutrition promptly to ensure a brighter future for children.
