Transport fare declined 1.28% in June — NBS

Transport Fare Watch for June 2024, released by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Sunday, revealed that the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop declined by 1.28 per cent from ₦976.08 in May 2024 to N963.58 in June 2024.

On a year-on-year basis, it decreased by 26.23 per cent from ₦1,306.22 in June 2023.

In another category, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys intercity per drop was ₦7,029.23 in June 2024, indicating a decline of 0.52 per cent on a month-on-month basis compared to ₦7,129.46 in May 2024. On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 24.72 per cent from N5,686.49 in June 2023.

In air travel, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes for a single journey was ₦89,886.84 in June 2024, showing an increase of 0.51 per cent compared to the previous month (May 2024).

On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 14.18 per cent from ₦78,721.62 in June 2023.

The average transport fare paid on Okada transportation was ₦477.49 in June 2024, which shows an increase of 0.84 per cent when compared with the value recorded in May 2024 (₦473.51).

On a year-on-year basis, the fare decreased by 22.80 per cent when compared with June 2023 (₦618.52).

For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the average fare paid in June 2024 was ₦1,409.33, which indicates an increase of 1.69 per cent when compared to the previous month (May 2024).

On a year-on-year basis, it increased by 3.16 per cent from ₦1,366.22 in June 2023.

On state profile analysis, for intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare), the highest fare was recorded in Anambra with ₦9,450.67, followed by Gombe with ₦8,283.33. The lowest fare was recorded in Kwara with ₦5,510, followed by Ebonyi with ₦5,543.33. Taraba state recorded the highest bus journey within the city (per drop constant route) in June 2024 with ₦1,451.67, followed by Ondo with ₦1,206.67.

On the other hand, Abia recorded the least with ₦500.7, followed by Adamawa with ₦590.

Similarly, Rivers recorded the highest air transport charges (for specified routes single journeys) with ₦97,500.00, followed by Kano with ₦96,433.33. Conversely, Plateau recorded the lowest fare with ₦80,166.67, followed by Abuja with ₦82,50. Also, Lagos State had the highest motorcycle transport fare in June 2024 with ₦855.67, followed by Ondo with ₦708.33.

Anambra recorded the lowest fare with ₦282.12, followed by Bayelsa with ₦285.98. Similarly, the water transport fare was highest in Bayelsa with ₦4,550.21, followed by Delta with ₦4,255.98.

The lowest fare was recorded in Borno with ₦445.76, followed by Gombe with ₦565.67.

For analysis by zone in June 2024, transport fares of bus journeys within the city recorded the highest in the South-West with ₦992.62, followed by the South-South with ₦985.55, while the South-East recorded the lowest with ₦911.72.

In terms of bus journeys intercity, the South-South had the highest fare with ₦7,604.9, followed by the South-East with ₦7,238.93, while North-Central recorded the least with ₦6,797.25.

In air transportation in June 2024, the North-West recorded the highest fare with ₦92,262, followed by the South-West with ₦92,135.28, while the North-Central had the least with ₦85,047.73.

Also, commuters on a motorcycle (Okada) paid the highest fare in the South-West with ₦541.19 and North-East with ₦509.35, while the North-West recorded the lowest with ₦430.08.

The South-South zone had the highest fare on water transport with ₦3,582.3, followed by the South-West with ₦1,365.88, while the North-East had the least with ₦785.72.
