President Bola Tinubu has authorized the prompt reconstruction of the Wagga bridge, which connects Adamawa and Borno, according to Mohammed Goni, the Director-General of the North East Development Commission.
Goni revealed this on Sunday during a second inspection of the collapsed bridge in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa, just two months after the initial inspection.
He noted that while an assessment was carried out during the first inspection, the bridge has now completely collapsed.
“We were here about two months ago when the first incident happened and we promised to fix up the problem, but unfortunately before actions could start this is the situation.
“And the damage has happened about three times now, the good thing about it is that President Bola Tinubu has approved for the immediate reconstruction to ease the hardship people face on the road”, he said.
Goni mentioned that because of the rain, the work might not begin right away, but alternative measures would be put in place to ensure smooth vehicle movement on the road.
“As you can see now, people coming from Maiduguri have to stop over there, since we are here we will see what we can do “, he said.
Goni also reassured the community that plans are in place to rebuild other damaged culverts along the roadway.
Malam Mohammed Saidu, a local resident, informed the News Agency of Nigeria that the bridge was destroyed due to a heavy downpour on Thursday afternoon.
He mentioned that the incident has caused numerous difficulties, including preventing them from accessing markets in Goza, Borno, and making it equally challenging for people from Borno to cross over.
He urged both the federal and state governments to provide immediate assistance.
He also noted that farmers in the area might struggle to cross, particularly when the harvest season begins.
