A coalition of opposition lawmakers has raised concerns over an alleged attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to block the monthly local government allocations for Rivers State through a court injunction.
This accusation was made by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the spokesperson of the coalition and representative of the Ideato South/North Federal Constituency in Imo State, in a statement released on Tuesday.
According to Ugochinyere, credible sources have revealed that the APC and the pro-Wike group, working with anti-democratic elements, have initiated legal proceedings at the Federal High Court.
Their aim is to secure an injunction or ruling to withhold the statutory funds allocated to local governments in Rivers State.
“The APC and the Wike faction are attempting to manipulate the legal system to stop the constitutional allocation of funds to Rivers State LGAs, despite the fact that no court in Nigeria has ruled the election of the LGA chairmen as invalid,” Ugochinyere stated.
He also noted that this is part of a broader effort by the Wike group to create constitutional disorder, as they had previously filed a case seeking to seize all Rivers State allocations.
This new legal move targets several key entities, including the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee, the Accountant General of the Federation, the Minister of Finance, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Attorney General of Rivers State, and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.
