The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Osun State chapter, has announced the approval of a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for civil servants in the state. This development was disclosed by the Osun NLC Chairman, Christopher Arapasopo, in a statement released to journalists in Osogbo on Tuesday.
According to Arapasopo, the approval was granted by Governor Ademola Adeleke following extensive deliberations between the state government and organized labour.
He commended the state government for its commitment to the welfare of workers and for prioritizing their economic well-being during challenging times.
The new wage structure is expected to improve the living standards of civil servants and serve as a morale booster for the workforce.
The statement read, “The Organised Labour in Osun State and the Government, after exhaustive deliberations, have decided on ₦75,000.00 as the new minimum wage in Osun State.
” It further noted that the decision was the outcome of negotiations aimed at addressing the economic realities faced by workers in the state, including the rising cost of living and inflationary pressures.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, who has consistently reiterated his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, was praised by the NLC for taking a bold step to enhance the economic security of civil servants.
Arapasopo highlighted that the new minimum wage demonstrates the governor’s genuine concern for the plight of workers and his proactive approach to governance.
The approval comes at a time when many states across the country are grappling with financial constraints, making Osun’s decision a significant milestone in labour relations.
Observers believe this move could set a precedent for other states to follow, especially as workers in various parts of the country continue to agitate for better pay to cope with the harsh economic climate.
The NLC chairman also assured workers that the union would continue to engage with the government to ensure the prompt implementation of the new wage structure.
He urged workers to remain dedicated to their duties and cooperate with the government in achieving its developmental goals for the state.
Labour leaders and stakeholders across the state have welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that it will have a positive impact on the productivity and general well-being of civil servants.
The new minimum wage is expected to take effect immediately, with details of its implementation to be communicated to workers in due course.
This development underscores Osun State’s commitment to fostering a harmonious relationship between the government and its workforce while addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by civil servants.
