The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into the complaints at the Nigerian Embassy in London regarding issues with passport applications.
Tunji-Ojo disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
The minister’s statement comes after Nigerian nationals residing in the United Kingdom on Wednesday morning stormed the country’s high commission in London to protest the long delay in issuing their international passports.
In videos shared on social media, protesters expressed frustration over waiting over six months for their passports, despite being promised a two-week turnaround.
“Two weeks turn to six months. Enough is enough. No more delay,” one of the protesters said in the video.
They also demanded the cancellation of additional fees imposed by the embassy, holding placards that read, “Nigerian passports are our right. Say no to the $318 extra fee. Minister, you promised us 2 weeks, it is 6 months now,”
Tunji-Ojo, however, assured that corresponding actions would be taken as soon as possible.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding of all affected citizens as we strive towards an efficient service delivery in line with global best practices,” he added.
