Luis Suarez announces retirement from international football after 17 years

Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from the Uruguay national team.During a news conference on Monday, Suarez revealed that he will step down from international duty after Uruguay’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Friday.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona star leaves as Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, having netted 69 goals in 142 appearances over a 17-year international career.

“There’s no greater pride than knowing when it’s the right time to retire, and I’m fortunate to be stepping away on my own terms,” the emotional 37-year-old said.

“I know it would be very difficult to make it to the next World Cup.

I’m relieved to be retiring because I choose to, not because of injuries or being overlooked.”Suarez made his senior debut for Uruguay in February 2007, helping his team to a 3-1 victory over Colombia.
