Libya Threatens Legal Action as CAF Scraps AFCON Return Leg

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has removed the Group D second-leg fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya’s Mediterranean Knights from its schedule.

The match was initially slated to take place in Libya at 8 p.m., following the first leg, which Nigeria won 1-0 with a late goal at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.

However, controversy erupted when the Nigerian team and officials shared their ordeal, reporting over 14 hours of delays at a Libyan airport. Frustrated by the experience, the team returned to Nigeria. In response to the unfolding drama, CAF announced that it had opened an investigation into the matter.

The Libya Football Federation, meanwhile, accused Nigeria of sabotage and threatened to pursue legal action.

CAF also released an updated schedule of matches for Tuesday but notably omitted the Libya vs. Nigeria fixture from its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
