The Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims that President Bola Tinubu extended the tenure of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as speculated in some quarters.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, clarified that the President had only given his approval for the lawful tenure of the IGP as outlined in the Constitution.
He emphasized that Egbetokun’s appointment is for a fixed term of four years. The statement read, in part:
“The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to misleading reports regarding the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police.
We wish to categorically state that President Bola Tinubu did not extend the IGP’s tenure, but instead approved the proper application of the law governing the office.
”Adejobi further explained that a letter dated November 3, 2023, was issued to the IGP following his confirmation by the Police Council, and it clearly stated that the President had approved a four-year tenure in line with Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He added that Egbetokun does not need to seek a tenure extension as his four-year term is yet to elapse.
The spokesman also dismissed ongoing speculations as the work of mischief makers spreading false information for personal gain.
