High Cost of Ram Dampens Eid Celebrations in Kaduna.
As the holy festival of Eid al-Adha approaches, many residents of Kaduna are facing a somber reality: the soaring prices of rams are making it difficult for them to participate in the traditional sacrificial rituals.
This year, the economic pressures have cast a shadow over what is typically a joyous occasion, where families come together to celebrate and honour the tradition of Qurbani.
Economic Strain on Households Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” holds significant religious importance for Muslims worldwide. Central to the celebration is the act of sacrificing a ram, goat, cow, or other livestock, symbolising the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.
In Kaduna, as in many parts of Nigeria, rams are the preferred choice for this ritual. However, this year, the prices of rams have skyrocketed, leaving many families struggling to afford this essential part of the festivities.
Reports indicate that the cost of a single ram has increased by as much as 50% compared to last year. For many households already grappling with the high cost of living, this surge in prices is proving to be a significant burden.
Market Dynamics and Price Surge Several factors have contributed to the increase in ram prices. Key among them is the general inflation affecting goods and services across the country. Additionally, the cost of animal feed has risen, and transportation expenses have surged due to higher fuel prices.
Security challenges in some northern regions have also disrupted livestock farming and trade routes, further limiting supply and driving up prices. Local traders at popular livestock markets in Kaduna, such as the Tudun Wada and Kasuwan Magani markets, confirm the price hike. Many traders attribute the high prices to the increased cost of acquiring and maintaining livestock.
A trader at the Tudun Wada market, Musa Ibrahim, explained, “We are not happy about the high prices, but we have no choice. The cost of feeding and transporting these animals has gone up, and we have to cover our expenses.
Impact on Eid Celebrations
For many families in Kaduna, the inability to afford a ram means that their Eid celebrations will be less festive. The sacrifice of a ram is not only a religious duty but also a communal activity that fosters unity and charity. Traditionally, the meat from the sacrificed animal is shared among family, friends, and the less fortunate, ensuring that everyone gets to partake in the celebration.Hauwa Bello, a mother of four, expressed her frustration: “Eid is supposed to be a time of happiness and sharing, but with the cost of rams so high, we cannot afford to buy one. This year, we will have to find other ways to celebrate, but it will not be the same.
Community Responses
In response to the high prices, some community members and organizations have stepped in to help. Charitable organisations and wealthy individuals are donating rams to less fortunate families, ensuring that they can still participate in the sacrificial rites.
Additionally, some mosques and local groups are organizing collective sacrifices, where multiple families pool their resources to purchase and share a ram.Despite these efforts, the overall sentiment in Kaduna is one of concern and disappointment.
The high cost of rams is a stark reminder of the broader economic challenges facing many Nigerians. As families gather to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the hope is that future festivities will be more accessible and inclusive, allowing everyone to fully partake in the joy and spirituality of the occasion.
