Nsikak Akpan, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Foreign Links Campus, Moro, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has set a new world record for the longest marathon lecture.
Akpan surpassed the previous record of 139 hours, 52 minutes, and 42 seconds, held by Indian professor Arvind Mishra, by reaching 142 hours on Sunday morning. Despite breaking the record, Akpan aims to continue lecturing until he surpasses the 150-hour mark.
During his lectures, Akpan, an environmentalist, urged governments at all levels to enforce laws protecting the environment and public health.
He highlighted the dangers of smoking in public, emphasizing the harm caused to both smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke.
Akpan called on authorities to ensure the enforcement of laws prohibiting smoking in public places to safeguard public health.
He also criticized the Osun State government’s practice of concreting road medians, advocating for the preservation of greenery to absorb harmful emissions from vehicles. According to Akpan, the absence of plants along roadways increases the risk of diseases, as harmful elements like carbon monoxide and heavy metals are released into the atmosphere.
Akpan began his record-breaking lecture on Monday, September 23, 2024, covering various topics related to ecology and environmental science.
