Economic activities came to a halt in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, on Thursday as operators of commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles protested the fuel price hike introduced on Tuesday.
The demonstrators obstructed major roads such as Abdulazeez Attah Road, which connects Geri Alimi, Oja Oba, Taiwo/Post Office, and Maraba/Zango routes, halting traffic and disrupting business operations across the city.
While some commercial vehicles were still operating early in the day, by noon, those still working were compelled to stop, leaving many commuters stranded at bus stations in search of transportation.
“We are buying fuel at N1,200 per litre. We cannot get money to feed our family after fueling our vehicle with N1,200 per litre.
” President Tinubu should reverse the fuel price to N200 where he met it if he still wants Nigeria to exist,” some of them said as they matched on the streets.
Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has ordered the swift dispatch of buses to various areas within the city to facilitate commuter transportation.
“The buses are to take people to the most central destinations free of charge. We hope that persons attending the SUBEB job placement interviews would find this helpful, particularly in the metropolis,” a statement released on Thursday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, announced.
The statement also mentioned that the governor urged both transport operators and the general public to remain patient regarding the recent increase in fuel prices, noting that various government officials are examining the issue with the welfare of the public as their primary concern.
“The inconveniences are regretted, and we are confident that things will ease as soon as possible,” it reiterated.
