Free CNG conversion: Seyilaw urges commercial vehicles to reduce transportation fare or face penalty

Seyilaw has urged the commercial drivers whose vehicles underwent free conversion to CNG to reduce their transportation fare

Popular comedian, Oluwaseyitan Lawrence Aletile known as Seyilaw has urged the commercial drivers whose vehicles underwent free conversion to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce their transportation fare or face a penalty.

Seyilaw made the call through a post he shared on his verified X account on Sunday afternoon following the free conversion of some vehicles to CNG.

“The government needs to look for a way to tag all the commercial vehicles that are converted to CNG free of charge so that we can identify them and crash prices of transportation,” Seyilaw wrote.

“Some Nigerians are too wicked. How do you enjoy free conversion and still go about charging like a petrol fueled car? There should be a penalty for such an act.”

It should be noted that President Bola Tinubu on September 10, 2024 in a bold step to reduce fuel costs and offer Nigerians an affordable alternative to petrol and diesel made CNG available for vehicles at just ₦230 per litre.

This landmark initiative, according to the president is aimed at alleviating the financial strain caused by the high cost of petrol which currently exceeds ₦900 per litre.

According to a statement signed by Project Director, Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), Michael Oluwagbemi last Tuesday, the move reflects Tinubu’s commitment to reducing the cost of living for Nigerians, particularly following the recent removal of fuel subsidy.

According to the statement, the PCNGi promises to deliver wide-reaching economic relief, especially to those dependent on transport for their livelihoods.

As part of this transformative initiative, President Tinubu has ordered the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles across the country.

The Federal Government also on Friday announced free CNG conversion services for vehicles at six locations across Lagos State.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the conversion will start on Friday, September 13, from 3 pm to 6 pm with the service available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The first 50 vehicles at each location that pass inspection will receive free CNG conversion kits, allowing refuelling at ₦230 per SCM of CNG at NIPCO stations, this helping to reduce transportation fare.

Osiyemi encouraged residents to seize this opportunity. The designated conversion centres in Lagos are: – Femadec: Km 42, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Majek Second Gate Stop, Abiju Ibeju, Lekki.
– Portland: No. 1, Ojota Interchange Terminal, Bayo Shodipo, Ojota.
– Mezovest: KM 23, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ajah, opposite Kilimanjaro, beside Libmat Motors.
