Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to meet today (Monday) to address the leadership turmoil within the party.
The crisis intensified on Friday following a series of suspensions and counter-suspensions among top officials.
The PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, announced the suspension of National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN.
However, in a swift retaliatory move, the Ajibade-led faction suspended both Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, escalating tensions further.
The power struggle has persisted since the fallout from the 2023 general elections, with the emergence of a factional PDP Chairman, Alhaji Yayari Mohammed, adding another layer to the conflict.
Despite a court injunction barring any attempt to remove Damagum, Mohammed, who aligns with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s faction, assumed office on Sunday.
The crisis reflects a deeper rift within the party, with Damagum enjoying the backing of at least four governors, while Mohammed has secured the support of six.
Meanwhile, two out of the 13 PDP governors remain neutral, distancing themselves from the camps of both Atiku and Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).Today’s emergency meeting of the PDP governors aims to find a resolution to the leadership dispute.
However, failure to reconcile the warring factions could deepen the crisis, posing a significant threat to the party’s unity and future stability.
