EPL: Guardiola speaks on bringing back Sterling to Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his fondness for Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling, but has categorically ruled out the possibility of the 29-year-old returning to the Etihad Stadium.

Sterling, who joined Chelsea in a £47.5m deal in 2022, is reportedly seeking a departure from Stamford Bridge after being sidelined by new manager Enzo Maresca.

When questioned about a potential reunion with Sterling, Guardiola stated:

“He’s a Chelsea player, absolutely. I have a strong attachment to the time we shared with Raheem, and I wish him all the best.

However, he remains a Chelsea player, and I won’t consider bringing him back to Manchester City.”

Guardiola’s response highlights his affection for Sterling, but also his commitment to his current squad and reluctance to disrupt the team’s dynamics.

Both players could have finished higher on the final table had they not been walked over on the opening game of Match Day 2 due to administrative lapses as they arrived late for their games.

Due to inadequate funding and lack of support from the Federal Ministry of Sports, the players traveled to Sri Lanka without a coach, and they were psychological affected after they were walked over.

FG begins workers’ weekly PMS in ministries

The Federal Government has commenced workers’ weekly performance management system, saying it will be a new management tool to serve as strategic driving service delivery in the Federal Civil Service.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Works, Yakubu A. Kofarmata, dropped the hint while flagging off policy in the ministry in Abuja, saying they are carrying out the directive of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF).

Kofarmata explained, that PMS, which is the second pillar of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021 – 2025 (FCSSIP25), has come to stay in the Service and the Federal Ministry of Works shall not be left behind in its implementation.

He stated that the commencement of the weekly observance of the system is designed to review, assess, and improve employees’ performance across all ongoing tasks, as well as projects within the Ministry, noting,”Today’s launch marks a critical step forward in our pursuit of excellence.”

The  Permanent Secretary, therefore , stressed that it will allow us to monitor progress, identify challenges, and ensure we remain on track to meet our organisational, and national goals as well as re-invigorate civil servants, who are successfully driving the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola  Tinubu.

He disclosed that the Ministry had developed its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); signed Performance Contracts at the management level, as well as cascaded it down to other staff; and its Dashboard ready with a total staff strength of 962, out of which 822 have signed the PMS contract with 457 supervisors.

Earlier, the  Director, of Human Resource Management, Mr. Aliyu Abdullahi, explained that the launch was meant to, majorly, draw attention to what PMS is all about and will now be done objectively as opposed to the use of the hitherto flawed and compromised Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER) system.

EPL: Premier League reveals when Semi-automated VAR will be used

The Premier League is set to delay the introduction of semi-automated VAR offside technology (SAOT) until 2025, as testing of the system continues.

Earlier this year, clubs unanimously voted to implement the technology, which is expected to reduce the average time for an offside check by 31 seconds.

The initial plan was to roll out SAOT “after one of the autumn international breaks,” with October being the most likely period.

However, during a Premier League shareholders’ meeting on Thursday, it was revealed that the system is not yet ready for deployment, raising doubts about its introduction this season.

SAOT automates the process of placing lines on players and the pitch, improving both speed and accuracy.

Additionally, the technology offers enhanced graphical visualisations of offside decisions, moving away from the current method of displaying lines on broadcast footage.

Jubilation as NLC, TUC Confirm FG’s Payment of N70,000 Minimum Wage to Over 1.2 Million Workers

NLC

Nigerian workers have confirmed receiving the Federal Government’s new minimum wage payment. Benson Upah, spokesperson for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Tommy Etim, Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), revealed this in separate statements on Thursday.

The confirmation follows in the news that the government had commenced payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage.Upah called on other entities to follow the Federal Government’s example, saying,

“We ask other entities to emulate this.” Likewise, Etim noted that the government’s committee on consequential adjustments had already provided a template, leaving no justification for delaying the payment of the new wage.

“We now advise all other parties to follow suit and start the payment of the new minimum wage,” he added.

A civil servant from the Office of the Head of Civil Service, who wished to remain anonymous, also confirmed receiving the new minimum wage for September 2024, saying, “I got an alert around 2 pm on Thursday.

I hope the arrears will be paid soon.” Some workers disclosed that they received an additional N40,000 on top of their previous salary as part of the consequential adjustment.

This development means that over 1.2 million federal workers have begun receiving the revised minimum wage. Earlier in the week, Ekpo Nta, Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, confirmed the government’s approval of an upward review of the consolidated public service salary structure (CONPSS) in line with the 2024 Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act.

This followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of the N70,000 minimum wage on July 18, 2024.

The Senate had passed the new minimum wage bill into law, doubling the previous N30,000 wage set during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

However, the wage increase comes amid soaring inflation, with headline and food inflation reaching 32.15% and 37.52%, respectively, in August 2024.
