CAF has ruled out the African Football League (AFL) for 2024, meaning clubs like Enyimba and other top teams from the Nigeria Premier Football League will miss out on the $1 million prize money.
Samson Adamu, CAF’s Director of Competitions, confirmed that the AFL will not take place next year, according to reports.
Mamelodi Sundowns, the reigning champions after winning the inaugural tournament in 2023, will hold onto the title for another year as SABC Sport reports that the competition will resume in 2025. The revamped edition is expected to feature 24 teams, up from the eight that participated in 2023.
Adamu explained, “The AFL is highly unlikely to happen this year due to time constraints, but plans for the next edition will be revealed soon. Advanced discussions are underway to make the AFL even bigger and better.”
He also hinted at the potential expansion of the tournament and how it will tie into the Club World Cup, promising an even more impressive event next time.
