Eight killed in India train crash after driver misses signal

At least eight people were killed in India on Monday when a goods train driver missed a signal and slammed into an express passenger train from behind, police and railway officials said.

Three passenger carriages were derailed and flipped on their side, while one carriage was thrust high into the air, precariously balanced on another.

The incident in West Bengal state is the latest to hit India’s creaking rail network, which carries millions of passengers each day — and the most recent reported failure of drivers missing basic signals.

Around 50 people were injured and taken to the hospital, Jaya Varma Sinha, chairman of India’s Railway Board, said in a statement.

“A goods train disregarded the signal and hit the train from behind,” Sinha said.

The dead included the driver and his co-driver, who missed the signal, as well as a train guard and five passengers, she added.

Sinha said the casualties could have been worse, but a guard wagon and two others carrying post that were attached to the back of the passenger train took the brunt of the crash.

“There were two parcel carriages attached… which protected other carriages from extensive damage,” she said, but added that the guard wagon “was badly damaged”.

-‘Tragic’ –
The crash took place in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district, when the Kanchenjunga Express train was hit by the goods train.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to “those who lost their loved ones”, in a post on social media.

West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called the crash “tragic”.

Moments after the collision, she said that “ambulances and disaster teams” were rushed to the site, giving orders for “action on war footing” to be initiated.

Local police officer Iftikar-Ul-Hassan told AFP he saw several badly injured people pulled out of the wreckage.

“The toll could rise further, as four people are admitted in a serious condition,” he said.

Darjeeling district police chief Praween Prakash told AFP the rescue effort had been completed.

“We are now working on clearing the debris,” he said.

-World’s highest rail bridge –
India has one of the world’s largest rail networks and has seen several disasters over the years, the worst in 1981 when a train derailed while crossing a bridge in Bihar state, killing an estimated 800 people.

In June last year, a three-train collision killed nearly 300 people in Odisha state.

In that crash, a packed passenger train was mistakenly diverted onto a loop line and slammed into a stationary goods train loaded with iron ore.

Three railway employees were later charged with culpable homicide and destruction of evidence.

In October, at least 14 people died when two passenger trains collided after one overshot a signal in Andhra Pradesh state.

The railways ministry said that drivers had been distracted because they were watching cricket on a phone, as hosts India played England during the one-day World Cup.

In March, Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said the train board was “installing systems which can detect any such distraction” to make sure drivers were “fully focused on running the train”.

In recent years, India has been investing huge sums of money to upgrade its network with modern stations and electronic signalling systems.

On Sunday, a train crossed for the first time the world’s highest railway bridge — 359 metres (1178 feet) above a river — in India’s Himalayan region, Vaishnaw said.

The arch-shaped steel structure over the Chenab River links sections of northern Jammu and Kashmir state, connecting the disputed territory to the rest of India.

Work on the railway track has been ongoing for nearly three decades, and the trial run comes ahead of a formal opening expected within weeks.

U.S. launches online passport renewal portal

The U.S. State Department has launched an online passport renewal system that allows Americans to bypass the traditional mail-in paper process that often leads to delays.

The State Department announced on Wednesday that the digital system is now fully operational after several pilot tests.

It said the digital system is available to adult passport holders whose passports have expired in the last five years or will expire within the next year.

It is not available for the renewal of children’s passports, for first-time passport applicants for renewal applicants who live outside the United States or for expedited applications, the State Department added.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that “by offering this online alternative to the traditional paper application process, the Department is embracing digital transformation to offer the most efficient and convenient passport renewal experience possible.”

The department disclosed that it has estimates that around 5 million Americans annually will benefit from the new service, noting that in 2023 it processed 24 million passports, 40% of which were renewals.

The introduction of the online platform comes as the State Department continues to recover from pandemic-related staffing shortages that severely delayed passport processing times.

The new online system enables applicants to skip the current process, which requires them to print out and send paper applications, photos and a check by mail, and submit their documents, photos, and payment through a secure website, www.Travel.State.Gov/renewonline.

The existing passport processing fees, which are currently $130 for a regular renewal, will remain unchanged.

Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Rena Bitter, whose bureau oversees passport processing, said the department hopes to expand the programme by including children’s renewals, second passports, and services for Americans living overseas.

“This is not going to be the last thing that we do,” Bitter told reporters. “We want to see how this goes and then we’ll start looking at ways to continue to make this service available to more American citizens in the coming months and years.”

Asaba 2024: Igali calls for adherence to age at National Youth Games

Bayelsa Sports Commissioner, Daniel Igali, has called for the strict enforcement of age eligibility for athletes participating in the National Youth Games (NYG).

Igali, a former world wrestling champion, emphasized the importance of selecting only under-15 athletes for the competition, noting that many participants were disqualified due to being overaged.

He reiterated that the primary purpose of the NYG is to identify and nurture young talents, rather than focusing solely on winning medals.

“The National Youth Games is designed to discover and develop future athletes, not just to win medals,” Igali said.

Reflecting on the recently concluded NYG 2024 in Asaba, Igali acknowledged that the event met expectations but stressed that improvements are needed in areas like organization and the screening process for athletes.

Igali also urged both the government and corporate organizations to provide more financial support to all sporting federations in the country.

According to him, such sponsorship would significantly enhance the growth and development of sports in Nigeria.

Yahaya Bello: “I Have Nothing To Hide” as He Responds to EFCC Invitation

Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has affirmed that he has nothing to hide as he honors an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The former governor, who concluded his second term in office recently, was summoned by the EFCC over allegations related to financial misconduct during his time in office.

In response, Bello expressed his willingness to cooperate with the commission, maintaining that he respects the law and welcomes any opportunity to clarify the accusations against him.

In a statement released by his media team, Bello said,

“This decision was made after thorough consultations with my family, legal team, and political allies.

I believe in the rule of law and have always strived to uphold it in my personal and public dealings.

” He emphasized that the invitation is part of a process to ensure accountability and transparency, and he is ready to prove that he managed Kogi State’s resources responsibly.

Bello’s legal team also expressed confidence that the former governor will clear his name, stating that the allegations against him are politically motivated.

According to them, Bello had previously sought enforcement of his fundamental rights to prevent harassment and ensure that due process is followed.

They believe that by presenting himself to the EFCC, Bello will set the record straight.

Supporters of the former governor have rallied behind him, praising his decision to cooperate with the EFCC as a show of integrity and respect for Nigeria’s legal system.

His political allies argue that his willingness to face the investigation without delay demonstrates his commitment to transparency.

As the EFCC’s investigation proceeds, many are watching closely to see how the case will unfold, especially with Bello being a prominent figure within Nigeria’s political landscape. While the former governor has faced various criticisms during his time in office, his legal team insists that his administration was focused on development and the welfare of Kogi State’s citizens.

Bello, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has been in the spotlight due to his ambitious political career, which includes a presidential bid in the 2023 elections. His involvement with the EFCC adds to the ongoing scrutiny of former and current political leaders in Nigeria, many of whom have faced similar allegations after leaving office.

The EFCC, Nigeria’s top anti-corruption agency, has made it clear that it remains committed to investigating and prosecuting any individual, regardless of their political standing, if they are suspected of corrupt practices. Bello’s cooperation with the agency is likely to set a precedent for how similar cases involving political figures will be handled in the future.

As the former governor prepares to meet with the EFCC, he reiterated his stance: “I have nothing to hide. I am confident that the truth will prevail.” Whether his actions will lead to exoneration or further legal challenges remains to be seen, but for now, Yahaya Bello continues to assert his innocence in the face of public scrutiny.

Yahaya Bello not in our custody – EFCC

The EFCC has said that Yahaya Bello is not in its custody

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello is not in its custody.

The EFCC in a statement signed by its spokesman, Dele Oyewale debunked an earlier report on Wednesday that Bello had honoured its invitation.

“Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody,” Oyewale said.

“Bello already declared wanted by the commission for alleged N80.2billion money laundering charges remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”

Director, Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael had disclosed on Wednesday morning in a statement on X that the former Kogi State Governor had honoured the invitation of the EFCC.

Michael said the decision to honour the invitation was made after due consultations with his family, legal team and political allies.

“The former Governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, had, all the while, only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights in order to ensure due process,” Michael said.

“The case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction and Alhaji Bello had been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing.

“It is important for the former governor to now honour the invitation of the EFCC to clear his name as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”

Michael said the former governor believes firmly in the efforts of the administration of President Bola Tinubu to place Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic development.

He further said that Bello has always supported the fight against corruption in the country.

Michael said it is on record that he was the first Governor of Kogi State to put in place an anti-corruption mechanism to check graft and ensure that the resources of the state work for the people.

He also said that Bello was accompanied to the EFCC headquarters by high profile Nigerians.

“It is our hope that the commission will be as professional as necessary and respect his fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Michael said.
