Court Orders Remand of Two REA Staff Over 1.85bn Fraud

The Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the remand of two staff members of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in prison custody over their involvement in a N1.85 billion fraud scandal.

The defendants, identified as Emmanuel Pada and Umar Laraye, were arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite on a 15-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the duo conspired to divert funds meant for rural electrification projects, using various bank accounts and shell companies to launder the stolen funds.

The court remanded the defendants in prison pending the determination of the case, adjourning the matter to June 20 for further hearing.

The EFCC vowed to continue investigating and prosecuting cases of corruption and fraud, ensuring that those found guilty face the full weight of the law.

This development sends a strong message that public officials entrusted with funds will be held accountable for any misappropriation or embezzlement.
