The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has urged the government to ensure the security of protesters and journalists across Nigeria

The Centre for Journalism, Innovation and Development (CJID) has urged the government at all levels to ensure the security of protesters and journalists across Nigeria.

The CJID made the request in a press statement on its X account on Sunday night and condemned the government’s inadequate response to its call for protection for protesters.

“It is Day 4 of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, and despite clear demands from protesters, the government’s response remains inadequate and dismissive,” It wrote.

“Together with the Rapid Response for Civil Protection coalition, we condemn the government’s inadequate response.

“We urge the government to ensure the security of protesters and take meaningful steps to address their grievances.”

The CJID had earlier strongly condemned the numerous attacks on journalists by the Nigerian Police Force during the #EndBadGovernance protests across the country, documented by Press Attack Tracker.

The centre also called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun to thoroughly investigate these reports and ensure that all involved officers are held accountable.

“These attacks have been substantiated by multiple video and pictorial evidence that our press attack tracker has now documented,” the statement read.

“In video clips received by CJID, police officers were seen physically assaulting, intimidating, and violating the rights of journalists in different parts of Nigeria.”
