In what appears to be a rare occurrence, a giant whale washed up on the shores of a beach in Bayelsa State, sparking excitement among residents of the community. The massive fish, which measured 15 meters long, five meters wide, and three meters high, was found dead on the beach.
Residents of the Okpoma kingdom in the Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State trooped out in their numbers to butcher the whale and share the meat. The youths in the area and neighboring communities of Twon-Brass, Odioma, Fish town, and Sangana were seen with machetes, hawk shaws, axes, and different containers to butcher the sea mammal.
Community chiefs and elders looked on from the shore, expressing delight that it was food from the gods of the land who had seen their present suffering, especially with soaring prices of meat and other food items. This is not the first time a whale has washed up on the shores of Bayelsa. In August 2019, a similar giant whale got stranded at the same waterside and was also butchered by the residents for meat for about three days.
