Late Sunday night, a large group of gunmen riding motorbikes attacked Yargoje in Kankara, Nigeria. The attack resulted in many deaths, with local reports suggesting over 50 people were killed, including women and children.
Many others were injured and taken to the hospital, and an unknown number of villagers were abducted. The gunmen also looted shops and caused widespread destruction in the town.
Attacks of this nature have become distressingly common in northwestern and central Nigeria, with armed gangs, known locally as bandits, terrorizing communities. Despite government assurances, authorities seem unable to prevent these attacks.
Residents of Yargoje reported that the gunmen arrived on motorcycles, shooting indiscriminately and causing chaos. Survivors are still trying to determine how many people were taken during the attack.
This incident follows a pattern of similar attacks in the region. In December 2020, over 300 students were kidnapped from a nearby school and later released.
In March of this year, another attack in the same area resulted in dozens of people being kidnapped. The ongoing violence highlights the challenges faced by authorities in addressing the security crisis in the region.
