Academic activities at Western Delta University in Oghara, Delta State, were temporarily halted on Thursday due to an invasion by suspected armed robbers on the university campus.
PUNCH Metro reported that the intruders accessed the campus through an unfenced area at the back, intending to rob students.
Sensing danger, the students promptly raised the alarm and sought safety in nearby areas.
Thanks to the swift response of law enforcement agents, no casualties or significant disruptions to the university’s operations occurred, as the invaders reportedly scattered upon seeing the security operatives.
When reached by our correspondent, SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Command, confirmed the incident.
He said, “They (the suspected robbers) entered through the broken fence at the back of the school, but the police responded swiftly and they fled.”
Additionally, Simeon Okpoko, a student leader at the University, remarked that “the incident underscores ongoing security challenges facing educational institutions and highlights the importance of vigilant security measures to safeguard students and staff alike”.
In the meantime, the university administration is enhancing security measures to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of the campus community.
