…I’m thrilled to be part of this incredible experience – Divine Imode

The All Nigeria Amazon Scrabble Championship, (AASC), may have come and gone but the sweet memories and friendships created from the first of its kind tournament will last forever.

This is the submission of scrabble lovers and stakeholders across the country as they share their thoughts on the all-female Championship.

Bukunmi Afolayan, a woman with unraveled dexterity on the board was crowned Queen of Nigerian Scrabble in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The singer, songwriter and coach won, following a last minute bashing of Divine Imode who failed to hold steam to win ten out of twelve games, losing twice by a slim margin of 4 & 12 in round 2 and round 9.

Victorious Bukunmi Afolayan found herself smiling to the bank with N320,000 following an elaborate closing ceremony.

Divine, the girl with a chic haircut settled for the third position as she lost, 536 – 361, 392 – 288 points in the final games of the day.

Joy Ola, 2023 African Games gold medalist, secured the second spot due to higher cumulative points of plus 948 from 9 wins and 3 losses.

Sharing her experience in Benin with your authoritative and award-winning news channel FIRST ZEALMEDIACAST BLOG is Blessing Ola, an Amazon with class on and off the board.

“My experience at the ASSC, was fun, mind blowing, intriguing and definitely an eye-opening experience. I did great, but I could do better, there’s more room for learning and improvement,” she stated.

She went on to add that the championship was not just an event for mining gold in female scrabble but also to build friendships.

“The event created the platform for me and other female wordsmith especially the young ones to showcase our talent and get exposure.

It also enabled me to network, socially connect with new, old, and refreshing people from different works of life,” the Amazon explained.

At the first of its kind tournament, put together by the Vice President of Nigeria Scrabble Federation, (NSF), Engineer, Bright Idahosa, the ladies were not just treated as Queens and Princesses but as pink diamonds.

This the scrabble lover from the Ola Scrabble dynasty who has a soft spot for chocolate reiterated.

“The food, the deserts were so appetizing, tasteful and succulent, I am a foodie, and I love to cook, plus the sportsmanship that was displayed was beyond what I imagined, it was like we were this one big family, almost everybody, if not everyone were like sister’s keeper regardless,” she emphasized.

She thanked the organizers of the noble event, Words and Wits, for recognizing the girl child and creating a springboard for female scrabble to fly.

“This event has given female scrabble folks a voice, recognition, it has thrown a challenge to us to work harder, and it has created more awareness for potential female scrabble players in Nigeria and beyond.

“This is the maiden edition of ASSC in Nigeria, I mean it’s a big deal, it’s something to be proud of, I want to use this opportunity to thank the Brains behind this wonderful, amazing and classic event, special thanks to Mr. Bright Idahosa, the Vice President of Nigerian Scrabble Federation.

“To the president of Nigerian Scrabble Federation Chief Engineer Olobatoke Aka, to the National Coach Prince Ikolo, to the technical crew, media men, to all the sponsors, and to those who have contributed one way or the other and of course to all Amazons, #beautywithbrains,” she concluded.

Also relating her experience at the event is the lady with a chic haircut, Divine Imode, a 300 Level Human Physiology student of Port Harcourt.

“I’m thrilled to share my experience at the first all-female Amazon Scrabble game in Nigeria, held in Benin.

Despite a stressful journey, I won two out of three games on the first day, telling myself it was a great start.

The next day, I won six straight games before the King of the Hills (KOH), becoming 8-1 and feeling unstoppable. I led the standings with a one-game advantage, and I was proud.

“In the KOH, I faced Akpos Malafukumo (BG) and won, making me 9-1.

I was overwhelmed, having never imagined topping the table alongside such talented players.

Unfortunately, I lost my next two KOH games to the tournament winner, dropping me to third place. Those games were emotional, and I made errors that cost me, losing with a -285 spread.

“Despite this, I’m proud of my performance, considering my busy school schedule.

I want to thank the organizers for doing a job well done(an unforgettable event), participants, my coach Eta karo, Dennis Ikekeragor, University of Port Harcourt and my supportive family for making this event possible🙏🥹.

I enjoyed myself, and I’m sure everyone else did too. Well done to all participants, and better luck next time to my opponents!

“Once again, I’d like to extend my warmest congratulations to the winner of the tournament! Your skills and dedication to Scrabble are truly inspiring.

And to myself, I say congratulations on a game well played! Reaching third place and achieving a 9-3 record are accomplishments to be proud of, and I’m thrilled to have been a part of this incredible experience. Here’s to many more exciting Scrabble adventures ahead! 🥳
Scrabble wins ❤️,” she explained.

African Games gold medalist, Joy Ola who took second place at the championship also had some nice words for the organizers.

“The All Amazon Scrabble championship was a groundbreaking event, I think it’s one of the most organized tournament I’ve attended so far in Nigeria.

The event was full of positivity and hostility, it is also an eye opener for other female Scrabble players in the country and I believe the next edition will even be bigger and better.

“My heartfelt gratitude goes to the organizers for organizing such a seamless competition,” she stressed.

Nigeria University Games gold medalist, Priscilla Akhabue joined the long list of scrabble lovers who were swept off their feet by the historic Championship.

The All Nigeria Amazon Scrabble Championship 2024 was a brilliantly organized tournament, I particularly loved the players, everyone was so cool and chill, good vibes and good Scrabble, she said.

The championship tickled the fancy of various other stakeholders and corporate bodies in the game of words.

“The All Amazon scrabble championship surely added flavor and glamour to scrabble tournament play and organization in Nigeria. The organizers left no stone unturned in making preparations for what turned out to be a master-class novel competition geared towards encouraging the female folks to playing scrabble,” a scrabbler stated.

The championship is beginning to make the male folks jealous as they stated that female wordsmith will only be competing in All female events where they will be treated as celebrities.

“However, the low part is, as soon as this tournament gain’s attraction and become more popular, sooner or later you will find out that our female folks will become less desirous in competing with their male counterpart and the multiplier effect would be the much talked about and desired gender equality which will be further downplayed.”

The closing ceremony of the groundbreaking tournament had various big guns in attendance:

★ General Manager, Vibes FM, Peace Ifidon who presented the crown to Bukunmi Afolayan.
★ President of Nigeria Scrabble Federation, (NSF), Engineer Toke Aka
★ Prince Sir, Anthony Ikolo, head coach of the scrabble national team

Ogun Police Take Down Suspected Serial Kidnapper and Killer

Ogun Police Take Down Suspected Serial Kidnapper and Killer

The Ogun State Police Command has detained a 29-year-old individual, Ogunnaike Philip, under suspicion of murdering at least three young girls, one of whom is 18 years old, in different incidents throughout the state.

According to the police, the suspect’s approach involved enticing his victims into the woods, where he would restrain them, strangle them, and subsequently leave their bodies behind after taking their mobile phones.

The authorities reported that inquiries indicated the suspect is believed to be a serial killer who fled from the Ibara Correctional Centre nearly two years ago while being transported to the Isabo Magistrate Court for an ongoing armed robbery trial.

In a press conference on Friday, the authorities disclosed that Philip’s victims included 18-year-old Akinsanya Habibat, 22-year-old Abigail Dina, and 23-year-old Mary Ogunyemi.

In a statement issued late Friday by the spokesperson for the command, Omolola Odutola, it was disclosed that Philip admitted to murdering the three victims and abandoning their remains in the woods.

After his admission, the suspect guided the police anti-kidnapping unit to various sites where the three victims were slain.

As reported by the police, 22-year-old nurse Dina departed from her residence in Iyana Egbado, Ewekoro Local Government, at 8:10 AM on May 6, 2024, to go to her job at Sodipo Medical Centre in Itori, when she was kidnapped by the suspect and taken to an undisclosed forest in Itori.

The statement read, “The kidnapper stole an iPhone XR from the victim and then strangled her to death. Subsequently, he contacted her family by phone and demanded a ransom of N50,000.

“Afterward, the suspect abandoned her body in the forest. Ogunnaike Philip, a male suspect, was arrested in connection with the case and confessed to committing the crime.

“The suspect confessed that he fled to Saki town in Oyo State, where he exchanged the stolen iPhone XR for an Infinix Hot 10 and received a cash sum of N65,000.”

“The victim was bound with rope and robbed of an iPhone S. Ogunnaike Philip and his accomplice jointly strangled her to death. The two criminals later contacted the victim’s mother by phone and demanded a ransom of seventeen thousand naira.

“The duo abandoned the corpse of the victim inside the bush and fled to Badagry, Lagos State, to sell off the stolen iPhone S at the rate of N8,000.”

The order indicated that the accused was accountable for the death of his employer’s 18-year-old daughter, Akinsanya, during an event that occurred at Mile 6, Abeokuta, on August 30, 2024, at approximately 5 pm.

Philip is accused of abducting the victim, sexually assaulting her, and subsequently strangling her with a rope on her father’s farm within the area.

He subsequently contacted the parents to request a ransom before escaping the location.

The command noted, “The father received a phone call on his daughter Habibat Akinsanya’s phone, informing him that she, aged 18, had been kidnapped and that he needed to pay a ransom of one million naira for her release.

“The victim’s father subsequently paid N30,000 to the Moniepoint account number given by the kidnapper. Later, her body was discovered on her father’s farmland in Obasa village, Mile 6, Abeokuta, Ogun State, along with her PoS machine found beside her.

“The suspect admitted that the victim’s father employed him and was working on the farm when he saw the victim passing by. He lured her to the farm and then tied her legs with rope.”

PDP Members Divided Over Damagum’s Replacement as Party Leader

PDP Members Divided Over Damagum’s Replacement as Party Leader

In anticipation of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for October 24, two prominent members of the party are in disagreement over which region should nominate a successor for the party’s interim National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

Since 2023, the PDP has faced internal conflicts, with some members accusing Damagum of failing to implement adequate reforms within the party.

Members of the PDP, particularly from the North Central region, have therefore called for Damagum’s removal and insist that his replacement should come from their zone.

They cited Section 47(6) of the party’s constitution, which states that when a party office becomes vacant, the Executive Committee must appoint a replacement from the same region or zone as the outgoing officer to complete the term.

Segun Showunmi, the 2023 PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, disagreed with Kola Ologbondiyan, the party’s former National Publicity Secretary, over which zone should select Damagum’s successor.

Ologbondiyan argued that the replacement should be selected from the North Central region, while Showunmi maintained that the position was not specifically reserved for that area.

“What the North Central is agitating for is for Damagum to leave that post and return to his position as Deputy National Chairman. The zone will then nominate a suitable person to replace him and complete the tenure,” Ologbondiyan stated.

“We are demanding that North Central be given its rightful place in the National Working Committee, which is the position of National Chairman of the party,” he added.

Showunmi, however, said, “What led to the removal of the last Chairman? Was it not the North Central issues at the heart of this problem? The party will lose if they continue this way.

“I am from the South, and I have the best ideas to get this party moving right now. We need to bring young people into this party. By even putting myself forward for this, I am taking a big risk with my money and time. So, it is not about the zone; it is about the PDP, and I am saying all this because we cannot have a one-party state.”

‘Tomatoes and Cancer’ What You Need To Know

Tomatoes, often overlooked as a simple ingredient in our daily meals, have long been lauded for their rich nutritional value. However, as the world continues to grapple with the complexities of cancer, researchers have uncovered a surprising ally in the fight against this devastating disease: the humble tomato.

Packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, these juicy fruits have quietly made their way into the spotlight as potent cancer fighters. For years, scientists have extolled the virtues of tomatoes, highlighting their rich nutritional profile and antioxidant properties. Now, a growing body of evidence suggests that eating tomatoes may play a significant role in cancer prevention.

Lycopene: The Cancer-Battling Champion

The vibrant red hue of tomatoes is primarily attributed to lycopene, a carotenoid pigment that belongs to the family of antioxidants. Numerous studies have linked lycopene consumption to a reduced risk of various cancers, including prostate, breast, lung, colon, and stomach cancers.

How Lycopene Works

  • Antioxidant Power: Lycopene acts as a potent antioxidant, neutralising harmful free radicals that can damage cells and DNA, which are key factors in cancer development.
  • Inflammation Reduction: Chronic inflammation has been implicated in several types of cancer. Lycopene helps reduce inflammation, creating a less hospitable environment for cancer cells to thrive.
  • Cell Cycle Regulation: Lycopene may interfere with the cell cycle, preventing abnormal cell growth and division that can lead to cancer.
  • Apoptosis Induction: In some cases, lycopene can trigger apoptosis, a process of programmed cell death, eliminating damaged or cancerous cells.

Enhancing Lycopene Absorption

To maximize the benefits of lycopene, it’s essential to prepare and consume tomatoes in ways that promote absorption. Cooking tomatoes, especially with a bit of oil, can significantly increase lycopene bioavailability. Consider these methods:

  • Cooking: Saute tomatoes with olive oil or add them to stews and soups.
  • Processing: Tomato sauce, juice, and paste are excellent sources of lycopene.
  • Combination: Consuming tomatoes with foods rich in healthy fats, such as avocados or nuts, can enhance lycopene absorption.

Incorporating Tomatoes into Your Diet

Tomatoes can be easily integrated into your daily meals. Here are some creative ideas:

  • Salads: Add cherry tomatoes or diced tomatoes to your salads for a burst of flavor and nutrition.
  • Sandwiches: Top your sandwiches with tomato slices or tomato-based spreads.
  • Soups and Stews: Tomato-based soups and stews are hearty and flavorful.
  • Smoothies: Blend tomatoes with other fruits and vegetables for a refreshing smoothie.

A Note of Caution

While tomatoes offer numerous health benefits, it’s crucial to note that no single food can guarantee cancer prevention. A balanced and diverse diet, along with regular exercise, is essential for overall health and well-being. If you have concerns about cancer risk, consult with a healthcare professional for personalised guidance.

In conclusion, tomatoes, with their rich lycopene content, have emerged as a formidable weapon in the fight against cancer. By incorporating these delicious and versatile fruits into your diet, you can take a proactive step towards protecting your health and reducing your risk of cancer. So, let’s raise a glass of tomato juice or enjoy a plate of pasta with tomato sauce to celebrate the power of this humble yet mighty fruit!

Preseident Bola Ahmed Tinubu Considers Major Cabinet Reshuffle

Uncertainty Looms Over Ministers as Tinubu Considers Major Cabinet Reshuffle

There are strong indications that President Bola Tinubu has finalized the list of individuals and their roles for his reshuffled cabinet.

Several sources within the Presidency, who spoke to Saturday PUNCH in confidence, revealed that Tinubu had completed the list of ministers to be dismissed and retained, with plans to release it on Thursday night, a day after arriving in the UK for his two-week annual leave.

Amid worsening economic conditions and nationwide protests in August, President Tinubu has been under growing pressure from both inside and outside the All Progressives Congress to remove non-performing ministers.

Despite occasional warnings from the president about underperformance, his cabinet has largely remained the same, except for the suspension of Dr. Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, in January 2024.

During a three-day retreat for cabinet members and presidential aides last November, Tinubu revealed that a Central Delivery Coordination Unit, led by his Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala-Usman, would evaluate the performance of ministers and senior government officials.

Tinubu noted that these regular performance evaluations would decide who would stay or be removed from the cabinet.

“If you are performing, nothing to fear. If you miss the objective, we’ll review it. If no performance, you leave us. No one is an island and the buck stops on my desk,” the President told participants.

A year after Tinubu’s cabinet was inaugurated in August, Sunday PUNCH reported that a reshuffle was approaching. However, officials who spoke with our correspondent couldn’t specify the timing.

It was also learned that the changes would go beyond mere portfolio exchanges. Some ministries, including the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, would be dissolved, while others would be reorganized and combined.

Officials, who spoke on Friday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk about the matter, said Tinubu was expected to release the list on Thursday but decided to “sleep on it” for a little while.

“We are just waiting for the go ahead. All I know is that we are waiting for him to send the new names of those he wants to drop and those he wants to appoint.

“We have been expecting them since yesterday (Thursday). I am not sure of any specifics regarding names for now.

“The last I know, he (the President) said he wants to sleep over the list again before he releases it. Maybe he still wants to change his mind about some names,” a source said.

Another source, who asked not to be named, said, “I’m surprised the list did not come out yesterday (Thursday). That thing is almost finalised already.”
