Akwa Ibom fire: NEMA, others offer relief items to victims

NEMA and other stakeholders have offered relief items to victims of the fire outbreak in Akwa Ibom State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Monday offered relief items to victims of the fire outbreak in Akwa Ibom State.

NEMA in a post on X said its Uyo Operations office in collaboration with the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, AKSEMA and other stakeholders distributed the relief items to victims.

It added that the fire disaster took place in Effiat, Uda and Ebughu communities in Mbo Local Government Area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom State.

According to the post issued by the agency, the relief items were made up of food and non-food Items.

“The distribution exercise was flagged off by the Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Sen. (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi ably represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Grace Jim and NEMA Uyo Ag. Head of Operations, Mrs Mmandu Aisueni representing the DG, NEMA,” the post read.

“Aisueni expressed the heartfelt condolences of the NEMA Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar to the people, adding that the items were to help cushion the effect of the disaster.

“She also charged the beneficiaries to be safety conscious, most especially with the NiHSA Annual Flood Outlook prediction that highlighted some Local Government Areas within the state as high flood risk prone areas.”

Responding, Eyakenyi appreciated the Federal Government through NEMA for providing the items to ameliorate the suffering of her people.

She thanked NEMA for the swift and timely intervention while urging the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items.

Eyakenyi corroborated the need for people to heed to disaster warnings and adopt better and safer ways of drying their fish as well as collaborate with government to reduce the impact of these disasters by maintaining good environmental practices.

Mr Wisdom Effiong Asukwo, the transition chairman and Chief Inyang Effiong Etim, the village head thanked the Federal Government, NEMA and her Excellency on behalf of the beneficiaries.

The distribution exercise which was carried out under tight security had other relevant stakeholders such as the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Also involved were the Military, Governor’s and Deputy Governor’s office personnel, the transition chairman and his excos, community, women and youth leaders as well as the media.
