A group of residents from Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, has filed a lawsuit against the Lagos state government, demanding details of the $100 million payment allegedly made by Aliko Dangote to acquire the land used for his refinery.

They also allege that only $1.4 million is reflected in the state’s account, leaving $98.6 million unaccounted for.

The residents, under the Ibeju-Lekki People’s Forum, claim that Dangote’s statement in July that he paid $100 million for the 7,000 acres of land contradicts the belief that the land was given to him for free.

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, names Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos state attorney-general, the accountant-general, and the permanent secretary of the lands bureau as respondents.

The residents allege, in the affidavits attached to the suit, that “about 48 communities affected by the allocation (of the 7,000 acres) on the coastal line of Ibeju-Lekki were displaced by the activities of Dangote and his company and the subsequent destruction of their means of livelihood”.

They claim that despite Dangote’s statement, the state government has failed to respond to the allegation or provide proof of the payment.

However, in the suit filed, the forum and De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, are asking the court to compel the Lagos state government to give an account of the $100 million payment.

The deponent, Yakubu Eleto, youth leader and leader adviser to the first and second applicants, also revealed in the affidavit that former Lagos State governor, Babajide Fashola, had announced at a gathering of traditional rulers in Ibeju-Lekki that the land was gifted to Dangote.

This, Eleto claimed, led to the affected communities accepting the land allocation as a swap for development.

“He said the land where Dangote refinery is sitting on today was gifted to him by the Lagos State Government, and that if Ibeju-Lekki indigenes aren’t careful, the project will be taken to another part of the state like Badagry,” Eleto said.

“That pursuant to the above address by the then Executive Governor, the indigenes of the community accepted the plea of the government by maintaining peace and taking the 7000 Acres of land allocated to Dangote as a swap for development.”

The applicants, however, noted that they were surprised at Dangote’s claim of purchasing the land, noting that despite the alleged purchase, the affected communities continue to lack basic social amenities, electricity, pipe-borne water, good roads, schools, and employment, while also facing significant environmental threats.

“That till the time of filling this suit, the office of the 1st Respondents acting for the remainder of the respondents refused to respond to Applicants’ correspondence.

“That there are speculations from some quarters that only $1,400,000 that reflected on the account of the 5th Respondents concerning the said transaction and up till now, the applicants are yet to know where the remaining 98,600,000:00USD are being kept.

“That all efforts to get a copy of the full information on the alleged claim of purchase of about 7000 acres of land proved futile despite persistent demand for the documents showing the inflow of the money to the 5th respondent’s account.”

They argue that despite repeated demands, the Lagos State government has neither honoured their letter nor obliged them with a copy of full information on the alleged claim of purchase of about 7000 acres of land despite our demands.

The applicants, however, prayed to the court to compel the respondents “to immediately furnish or make the information on the alleged claim of purchase of about 7000 acres of land available to the applicants through the applicant’s solicitors forthwith.”

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has announced that all tickets for the 2027 general election are open to all qualified Nigerians.

The fraction made the statement after a national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday.

The faction said the party’s presidential and governorship tickets are not reserved for any individuals, contrary to earlier reports.

This development comes after some Labour Party leaders, including Obi and Otti, as well as some elected Senators and House of Representatives members, met in Umuahia, Abia State, last week to form a 29-man caretaker committee to lead the party in the interim.

The Committee, which is to be chaired by former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, will midwife an election of new leadership in 90 days.

However, in a communiqué signed by Abure, and National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, the NEC nullified the decision taken at the stakeholders meeting convened by Otti in Umuahia.

The Julius Abure-led faction also claimed Otti lacked the authority to call such a meeting, citing Article 14 (4) (B) of the party’s constitution.

The communiqué read, “NEC in session also reviewed the decision of the National Convention to reserve its Presidential and Governorship tickets for Peter Gregory Obi and Alex Otti respectively,

“Consequently, all tickets of the party from Presidency to the House of assemblies are open to all qualified Nigerians.

“The NEC in session noted that the Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Alex Otti, who convened the meeting, did not have the power within the Party’s Constitution as provided in Article 14 (4) (B) gives power to call meetings only to the National Secretary with the approval of the National Chairman,” it reads.

“NEC in session further reiterates that the Governor of Abia State does not even have the power to call his Ward Executive meeting without the approval and the consent of his Ward Chairman.

“The meeting contravenes the provisions of Section 82 (1) (2) (a) of the Electoral Act 2022 which provides as follows; 82 (1) Every registered political party shall give the Commission at least 21 days’ notice of any Convention, Congress, Conference or meeting convened for the purpose of ‘merger’ and electing members of its executive committees, other governing bodies or nominating candidates for any of the elective offices specified under this act.”

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun has insisted that the Value-Added Tax (VAT) remains 7.5 percent.

Edun said this on Monday with the minister clarifying an earlier report which claimed that the VAT rate has been upwardly adjusted to 10% from 7.5%.

He did not only fault the reports making the rounds but Edun said VAT remains 7.5% and that is what will be charged on all the goods and services that are VAT-able.

“The current VAT rate is 7.5% and this is what government is charging on a spectrum of goods and services to which the tax is applicable. Therefore, neither the Federal Government nor any of its agencies will act contrary to what our laws stipulate,” he said.

“The tax system stands on a tripod, namely tax policy, tax laws and tax administration. All the three must combine well to give us a sound system that gives vitality to the fiscal position of government.

“Our focus as a government is to use fiscal policy in a manner that promotes and enhances strong and sustainable economic growth, reduces poverty as well as makes businesses to flourish.

“The imputation in some media reports on the issue of VAT and the opinion articles that have sprouted from them seem to wrongly convey the impression that government is out to make life difficult for Nigerians.

“That is not correct. If anything, the Federal Government has, through its policies, demonstrated that it is committed to creating a congenial environment for businesses to thrive.

“In fact, it is on record that the Federal Government, as part of efforts to bring relief to Nigerians and businesses, recently ordered the stoppage of import duties, tariffs and taxes on rice, wheat, beans and other food items.

“For emphasis, as of today, VAT remains 7.5% and that is what will be charged on all the goods and services that are VAT-able,” Edun concluded.

A total of 61 foreign nationals were deported by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) from the country in August 2024.

The figure of the deportees is contained in a report released by the service detailing its achievements for August 2024.

In the report, the reason for deporting the foreign nationals is to address and curtail the issue of irregular migration in the country.

The report partly read, “The NIS eased out 61 foreign nationals to address irregular migration. The new Visa Policy facilitated 8,352 Visas on Arrival.”

This is, however, not the first time immigration is deporting foreign nationals from the country.

Between 2020 and 2022, seventy foreign nationals were deported from the country.

The Edo government has announced an indefinite postponement of the resumption of all schools in the state over the hike in fuel prices.

The government announced this, in a memo by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, in Benin on Saturday.

The permanent secretary said the, scheduled for Sept. 9, was postponed until further notice.

“The Edo State Government hereby announces the postponement of the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo State, originally scheduled for Monday, 9th September 2024, until further notice.

“An official statement from the government has directed that schools remain closed due to the tension arising from the recent increase in fuel prices and the challenges faced by parents and guardians.

“The government urges parents, guardians, and caregivers to monitor the activities of their children and wards closely, given the current situation and the rising tension caused by the fuel price hike,” Akin-Longe said.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has appointed 28 Senior Special Assistants and 316 Special Assistants.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

He said the appointments were spread across the 18 Local Government Areas, 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and 203 Wards in the state.

“In continuation of efforts to enhance governance and service delivery to the people of the State, the Governor of Ondo State, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved the appointment of new Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs),” the statement read.

“While congratulating the new appointees, the Governor urged them to bring to bear their wealth of experience and dedicate themselves to serving the people of the State.”

The appointment comes two months to the Ondo State governorship election where Aiyedatiwa is seeking a fresh term in office.

Aiyedatiwa became governor following the death of Rotimi Akeredolu in Germany on December 27, 2023.
