Widow, five children die after eating local delicacy in Kano

Tragedy has struck a family of six in Gwarzo Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State, who died after eating Danwake, a local delicacy.

The deceased, a widow Alhakatu Abdulkarim, and her five children—Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman, and Jamilu—passed away a few hours after consuming the suspected contaminated delicacy.

A spokesman of the Kano Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the tragedy on Sunday, stating that the six family members who ate the food were rushed to Gwarzo General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead by doctors.

Kiyawa added that the command has initiated an immediate investigation to unravel the mystery behind the deaths.

He said, “We are still waiting for the medical report from the hospital to ascertain the cause of death of the six persons.”

The incident reportedly occurred last Thursday after the widow, who was caring for her five children, used expired cassava flour to prepare the food.
