A man, Opeyemi Ayomikun Afolayan has lamented the excessive charges of the FIRS in Ekiti State

A man identified as Opeyemi Ayomikun Afolayan has lamented the excessive charges of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in Ekiti State.

Afolayan who is a web hosting manager and website designer poured out his lamentation in a post he shared on his official X account on Wednesday morning.

He said he visited the Ekiti State office of the FIRS to inquire about obtaining a tax clearance certificate for a company that has been registered for approximately 14 months but is not yet operational.

Afolayan said he was informed that, as of a recent circular issued the previous day, there is now a fee of ₦25,000 for obtaining a Tax Identification Number (TIN) which used to be free.

Additionally, he said he was told that he would need to pay ₦5,000 for each month the company has been registered, amounting to ₦70,000, bringing the total to ₦95,000.

Afolayan said the officer mentioned that she could assist by reducing the tax but when he inquired about the tax clearance for a company older than six months, she replied that it would cost ₦50,000.

“I left the office without pursuing the matter further. It seems unnecessary to proceed with tax payments when the total required is ₦95,000,” he lamented.

“The level of lawlessness and fraudulent practices in government offices in Nigeria is deeply disheartening. She said her name is Mrs. Francis.

“Here is her number 0703 950 8174 kindly help me thank her for discouraging me from paying tax because I’m sick and tired of everything, FIRS, kindly automate these process fully.”
