Flood has affected several communities in Bayelsa State, leading to an enforced relocation of some residents to higher ground.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in a statement on Monday morning said the continuous rainfall is the cause of the flood in Bayelsa.
“The continuous rainfall since October 17 in parts of the South-South Zone has caused flooding in Biseñi, Bayelsa State due to rising water levels in the Orachi River, the Niger River and their tributaries,” NEMA wrote on X.
NEMA said it conducted a joint assessment alongside the Bayelsa State Emergency Agency (NSEMA), community leaders, media representatives and the governor’s special assistant.
It said the situation has affected several communities including Akudonu, Egbebiri, Kilama, Tuburu and Oturu-Ama, damaging homes, farmlands, fish farms and poultry facilities.
The agency said has forced farmers to harvest crops prematurely and residents are relocating to higher ground where they urgently need tents, food, water and sanitation facilities.
“The floodwaters are polluted and further rainfall could worsen the situation, necessitating immediate intervention from NEMA and the state government to mitigate the impact and assist the displaced communities,” the agency said.
