The organizers of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria have countered the Lagos State Government, saying that the protest continues today, Monday, August 5, 2025.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho in a statement on Sunday said that the protest had ended in the state.
“The Lagos State Government has expressed appreciation to the protesters in Lagos for their peaceful conduct and their announcement of an end to their action following the broadcast by President Bola Tinubu today,” Omotosho said.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the leaders of the protest in Lagos, saying: “Your stoppage of the protest today is a crystal clear affirmation of the fact that you know your collective voice has been heard by the government. What you have done is not only noble but the civilized thing to do.”
“In demonstration of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to continuous engagement with the youth, Mr Governor has directed that despite the stoppage of the protest, the dialogue and engagements which the state government initiated prior to the action I must continue.
“Consequently, Mr. Governor has directed Ministry of Youth and Social Development; Ministry of Information and Strategy and Office of Civic Engagement to immediately open wider channels of engagement with various stakeholders, including the protest leaders.”
The organizers of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, however, issued a press release to counter the Lagos State Government, saying that the protest continues today.
The organizers represented by Hassan Taiwo Soweto, Ayoyinka Oni and Oloye Adegboyega said the statement issued on Sunday night was temporary, adding that they will hold a world press conference today.
“We have listened with rapt attention to President Bola Tinubu’s broadcast earlier today Sunday 4 August 2024 on the ongoing protest by the Nigerian youth and people over the condition of hunger and hardship in the country,” the statement read.
“We consider it rather unfortunate that it took President Tinubu three days of protest during which over 40 Nigerian people were massacred and several others injured across the country by security operatives and state-sponsored thugs before he realized the need to address the country.
“Nevertheless, we consider the decision to address the nation an important victory for our movement. Without our courage and resolve to dare the odds, even this acknowledgement would not have happened.
“So far, we have demonstrated that a President is not greater than the rest of the country. We have also demonstrated that Nigerians are not slaves who would be told to surrender their fundamental and democratic rights to resist anti-poor policies.
“So we therefore call on all Nigerian youth and mass of the people to join us by 7am at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, Lagos tomorrow Monday 5 August 2024 which is Day 5 of the protest.”
