Northern Forum urges Tinubu to treat report on Emefiele with caution

Former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari

The Concerned Northern Forum has urged President Bola Tinubu to exercise extreme caution over the report submitted to him by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s private investigator, Jim Obazee.

The forum described the investigation by Obazee conducted to check the activities of the country’s apex bank under its suspended Governor, Godwin Emefiele as one-sided and partial, noting that some of Obazee’s recommendations are fatal to the economic wellbeing of Nigeria.

Obazee who was appointed special investigator in July 2023, submitted his final report tagged, ‘Report of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities (Chargeable offences) to the Presidency on December 20, 2023.

In the report, he revealed that the former CBN governor illegally lodged billions of naira in foreign currencies in no fewer than 593 bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, and China without the approval of the apex bank’s board of directors and the CBN Investment Committee.

The private investigator also alleged that some persons were used as proxies by Emefiele to set up Titan Trust Bank and acquire Union Bank.

But the northern group in a statement, Tuesday by its chairman, Aliyu Muhammad said the President must trade with a high level of caution, saying he (the president) might be blindfolded and walking in a field full of buried land mines.

Muhammad alleged that Obazee himself was not qualified to lead any special investigation most especially one that has to do with finance given his antecedents.

He said: “The man hired by President Tinubu is at the heart of scandals that involved siphoning and squandering of billions of naira while he was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), awarding and procurement of contracts to self using proxies, racketeering, acquiring luxury properties worth billions both at home and abroad that his salary could never justify and also accused of sexual harassment.
[ad]
“A known and tagged man of controversies, with so many dirty cuts on his character and financial records is not the man for such a job. Obazee’s professionalism, patriotism and loyalty are all questioned, his priorities are his financial gains or personal scores he set out to settle. Jim Obazee should be investigated and not the other way round.

“Unless the President is interested in his expertise of personal witch hunt and controversies that are capable of inciting chaos, Jim Obazee has no business investigating the CBN or any other financial institution for that matter. Mr President should heed to the action of firing Jim Obazee by his Predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari who is known to despise and fight corruption.

“Yes, CBN should be probed and investigated, but not by an individual with questionable character, integrity and a tone of corruption cases, graft and misuse of public funds himself.

“Therefore, President Bola Tinubu must not use this report, its basis are as compromised as the author of the report. It is one sided, partial and some of it’s recommendations are fatal to the economic wellbeing of Nigeria.”

Security forces in Rivers State thwarted an attempt on Friday by individuals clad in police uniforms to seize control of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission’s office.

The event is said to have taken place at approximately 1 a.m. on Friday.

Sources indicate that the criminals tried to breach the gates and secure room of the commission to steal important electoral materials intended for the local government election scheduled for Saturday in the state.

The source indicated that the governor headed a group comprising government officials, lawmakers from both the National Assembly and State House of Assembly, prominent political figures, and other leaders to the location.

While addressing reporters outside the RSIEC Office on Aba Road in Port Harcourt, Fubara denounced the incident and praised the security personnel for their vigilance.

Another Government House source said, “The governor said local government election was the internal affairs of states, and advised those trying to truncate the process and cause anarchy in the state to allow the federation unit conduct its affairs without interference.”

Oyebanji: Ekiti committed to revitalising farm settlement system

Governor Biodun Oyebanji says the Ekiti State Government is committed to revitalising the farm settlement system

Governor Biodun Oyebanji has said that the Ekiti State Government is committed to revitalising the farm settlement system.

Oyebanji said this in a post on Thursday morning following his visit to young farmers across three areas in Ekiti State.

“I visited our young farmers across three agricultural clusters, Eporo-Emure, Ikere and Aramoko-Erio as part of our commitment to revitalising the farm settlement system in Ekiti, reminiscent of the days of Chief Obafemi Awolowo,” he wrote on his official X account.

“During the visit, I personally interacted with the young farmers and addressed their needs. It was important for me to hear directly from them and ensure that their requirements were promptly attended to.”

Oyebanji said nearly 1,000 youths are actively involved in the “Bring Back Youth into Agriculture” initiative under the EKSG-YSJ partnership.

He said the goal of his administration is to empower the youth with the tools and support they need to succeed in agribusiness and use agriculture to drive industrialization.

“To support this initiative, we are taking bold steps, including providing land for the participants, clearing of the land, providing seedlings and agricultural extension services as well as offering secure living arrangements and modern dormitories at these farm settlements,” he said.

“Construction on these dormitories will begin in the next three weeks to create a comfortable environment for our young farmers to thrive.”

Oyebanji said that Ekiti is blessed with fertile land and it is high time the people of the state made the most of it.

He believes that by investing in agriculture, the state is not only securing its food future but also providing sustainable opportunities for its youths.

“This is just the beginning of a new era in our agribusiness journey and I encourage more local governments to join in this initiative,” he added.

“Together, we will create a prosperous future through the power of agriculture, the governor concluded.
