Victor Osimhen believes he can win the Puskas award for the goal of the year with a superb overhead kick he scored for Galatasaray in Saturday’s 3-0 spanking of Antalyaspor in a Turkish Super Lig game.
Mauro Icardi started the game ahead of Osimhen and Michy Batshuayi but the Argentine striker justified his starting role by netting a brace in the 10th and 52nd minutes to put Galatasaray 2-0 ahead.
Osimhen was back from a muscular injury to face Antalyaspor at the New Antalya Stadium after being unable to take part in the Super Eagles’ double-header 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification matches against Libya during the international break.
The injury made him miss Galatasaray’s previous two games, a 2-2 draw with RFS in the Europa League and a 1-0 Super Lig win over Alanyaspor as well as Nigeria’s 1-0 win against Libya.
Having made a return to training, the Super Eagles striker during an interview with the official website of Galatasaray said he looked forward to facing Antalyaspor and so it was as he replaced Icardi in the 78th minute.
Osimhen made a stunning return to competitive football by scoring a sensational overhead kick that will certainly be rated as the Goal of the Week in the Turkish Super Lig.
After the match, Osimhen expressed his delight with the goal and dedicated it to Galatasaray coach, Okan Buruk who was celebrating his birthday.
“The goal was an incredible goal. We got three points from here, I am very happy about that,” Osimhen said in a post-match interview. “I want to dedicate this goal to our coach, today is his birthday.
“When we look at the first half, we were not that good, we took the lead thanks to the goals scored by Mauro and we were able to play much better in the second half. We had a four-day holiday and as a result, we rested well, now we will continue in the same way.
“The first goal was normal, but it was not normal for the second goal not to count. These things are part of football. What is important here is for us to get three points as a team and to progress well.”
Osimhen also said that he believes the quality of the goal could see it nominated for the Puskas Award. “Of course it could be. It was an incredible goal. It’s a classy goal, why not, it could be.”
The 25-year-old opened his goal account for Galatasaray in a Super Lig game against Kasimpasa on October 3 with the Nigerian striker netting a brace in a 3-3 draw at the Rams Global Stadyumu.
Osimhen opened his account in the 20th minute and lashed a volley into the roof of the net for 2-0 before coming off for Dries Mertens in the 46th minute as a result of an injury.
Saturday’s goal against Antalyaspor marked his third for Galatasaray since joining the Turkish side on loan from Napoli late in the summer while he has also contributed four other assists.
