Hippo kills Yauri Emir’s guard in Kebbi

Malam Usman Maigadi, a guard at Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, has been killed by a mother hippopotamus, the News Agency of Nigeria, reports.

NAN gathers that the animal may have perceived the deceased as coming to harm its baby, hence the attack in self-defence.

Maiyaki, who was 60 years of age, was attacked on Sunday by an animal while fishing in Yauri River at Tillo Village in Yauri Local Government of the state.

” Maigadi has been buried, according to Islamic rites in Yauri, after a funeral prayer,” according to the Chairman of the Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu.

Also, Gov. Nasir Idris, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, condoled with Yauri Emirate and the family of the deceased.

Idris urged the emirate and members of the deceased family to take heart and accept the will of the Almighty in good faith.

The governor prayed to Allah to forgive the deceased’s  shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.

Train kills middle-aged woman in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged woman has been killed by a speeding train behind Yaba Market in Yaba, Lagos.

 The accident happened on Sunday morning.

An eyewitness said the woman, who appeared to be suffering from mental illness, did not attempt to leave the tracks when the train was approaching despite people urging her to.

  “She refused to leave the railway, and the train did not stop. After the train had passed, it cut her into two,” the eyewitness said.

  Upon visiting the scene, The Guardian learnt that the unfortunate incident had happened at about 9 am. Many bystanders at the scene of the incident said that they used to know the deceased as a demented woman.

  At the time of publication, her body was still at the site, surrounded by flies, and no authority figures were present.

 Meanwhile, the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has sympathized with the deceased of the train accident in Lagos yesterday.

  In a response to an inquiry by The Guardian from the Deputy Director Public Relations, NRC, Mahmood Yakub, said: “Good afternoon sir, may her gentle soul continue to rest in perfect peace.”

17 ISWAP terrorists drown attempting river crossing on Nigeria-Niger border

At least 17 militants belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist ring have reportedly perished while attempting to cross a river between the villages of Kafetoa and Bulabulin Gaidam, which lie along the border between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

The insurgents were reportedly trying to reach Tam village in Niger Republic, near the Nigerian village of Kannamma in Yobe State, when they met their waterloo.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the militants were swept away by strong currents as they attempted the crossing.

The terrorists were displaced from some of their bases, which include Bulabulin Geidam, Chettimari, and Diffan in Nigeria-Niger and along the borders.

Edo Election: Police restrict movement from 6am to 6pm today

The Police has restricted movements from 6am to 6pm today in Edo State due to the governorship election

The Nigeria Police Force has restricted movements from 6am to 6pm today in Edo State due to the governorship election.

The spokesman of the Nigeria Police, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the restriction in a post on X on Friday night.

“Edo Election: Media briefing by @Princemoye1 in Benin-City on Friday. Restriction of movements is from 6am to 6pm today, Saturday 21st September, 2024, in Edo State. Let’s abide by the order. Best wishes,” Adejobi said.

The Nigeria Police Force, meanwhile, has confirmed the arrest of two political thugs ahead of the governorship election which is taking place in the state today.

Adejobi, confirmed their arrest in a post he shared on his official X account in the early hours of Saturday.

“The Nigeria Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb electoral violence in Edo State with the arrest of two political thugs,” Adejobi said.

“The thugs are namely: Edwin Obanor, 43-year-old and Audu Tajudeen, a 41-year-old PDP member from Ugbogbo quarters, Igara Akoko, Edo.”

Adejobi said that the police arrested the two persons during an overnight raid carried out by officers.

The Police has also vowed to deal with illegal arms bearers and trouble makers who plan to disrupt the gubernatorial election in the state

Police rescue man from suicide on Third Mainland Bridge

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Police Command in Lagos State have rescued a 59-year-old man from committing suicide on the Third Mainland Bridge.

RRS made this known in a post it shared on its official X handle, @rrsLagos767, on Friday.

According to the squad, the man was prevented from committing suicide on Friday at about 12:00 p. m.

“RRS bike riders on routine patrol on the Third Mainland Bridge prevented a man from jumping into the lagoon.

“The man, a resident of Ilasa area of the state, stated that he was overwhelmed by challenges, it stated.

RRS said that its commander, CSP Shola Jejeloye, had counselled the suspect and directed he be kept in protective custody pending the arrival of his family members.

Gunmen shoot Osun civil servant dead after robbing him

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have killed a civil servant identified as Afolabi Adeleke in Osun State.

The incident, it was gathered, happened at the victim’s residence in Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government Area of the state.

The gunmen reportedly stormed Adeleke’s house in the wee hours on Thursday night, robbed him of his mobile phone and money and shot him thereafter.

The Acting Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, confirmed the incident on Friday, saying the victim died before he was rushed to a hospital.

Giwa-Alade disclosed that the gunmen killed Adeleke, who was a worker at the Ife North Local Government Secretariat before his tragic murder, with a dane gun. 

He said the moment the men of the underworld left the environment, neighbours who heard the gunshot reported the matter to the police.

According to him, the moment a team of police officers arrived at the scene, Adeleke was rushed to a hospital but he was declared dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. 

Giwa-Alade assured members of the public that the perpetrators would be arrested.
